Nearly a month as passed since I wrote this blog post. I don't know what stopped me from posting it, I think in my head I didn't want to be pestering you all for money. BUT I can't not share this amazing thing he's about to do, so here goes -

I’m never going to run a marathon. I think we’re all pretty clear on that.
I spend the majority of my day hunched over a desk eating biscuits and drawing pictures of lions farting or bears in sunglasses. I’m that person who runs for a bus and gets on red in the face and sweaty, you know the one? The one that you edge away from as they sit down next to you - that is me. Here is a photo of me when I climbed a small margin of The Great Wall of China earlier this month, pure proof that I am a seriously unfit human being, but I know this. Recently I bought a bike and I’m trying to eat healthier, and ok, I’m not saying I’ll NEVER do a marathon, but let’s face it, for the mean time it is unlikely.
(Thanks for the photo Jools!)
Over the years I’ve watched you all do amazing things for charity, run races, swim distances, sky dive! I’ve bought your cakes at bake sales (see previous paragraph for confirmation) and I’ve entered your charity raffles and quizzes. But I’m not trying to brag about how much of a do-gooder I am, I still cock up the recycling and I haven’t bought a Big Issue in years. But what I am trying to say is I’ve supported you lot now please, please, please support this.
My amazing boyfriend is about to do something incredible. In 2008 his dad passed away from Motor Neurone Disease; not much is understood about this disease and there is little funding to help research. In August Alister is going to be cycling from his dad’s previous place of work, The Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge, to his other place of work, The Observatory at Roque De Los Muchachos in La Palma. To quote Alisters ‘Just Giving’ page “This will involve a 3 week, 1200km cycle across southern England, coast-to-coast across Spain, and then a ferry to La Palma in the Canary Islands. If I make it this far, then I will be faced with the prospect of cycling up the gruelling 26 mile, 7% gradient road from Santa Cruz to the summit at 7,949ft.”
To say I’m proud of him is an understatement, but this isn’t about me doing a big soppy announcement of how great I think he is, this is about spreading the word and raising as much money as possible. So what am I really asking from all of you? PLEASE donate! Any amount will be so appreciated!! And if you can’t donate then please TELL YOUR FRIENDS, tweet about it, put it on facebook, and let EVERYONE know!!
SO what next? Head over to Alister’s Just Giving page - “http://www.justgiving.com/alisterbunclark” and donate as much as you can! Even the smallest amount will make a massive difference. Perhaps you’d like to promote this? Great! Please feel free to tweet or post on Facebook or anyway you’d like! Or perhaps you’d just like to leave an encouraging message for Alister, I’m sure he’s reading this right now, so why not leave him a comment bellow and let him know you’re supporting him! He’s inspired me to get on a bike (for the first time since I was a child) and get cycling and get fit and healthy, and I really hope he inspires you guys too.
